While safety and risk mitigation have seen significant improvements in many aspects of modern life, the persistent and acute safety issues in healthcare present a paradox. Despite the healthcare industry's commitment to 'do no harm, 'progress in reducing medical errors, even 25 years after the Institute of Medicine's seminal work To Err is Human, has been slow or imperceptible. However, this also means there is significant potential for improvement.

 

As healthcare systems become increasingly complex and constantly changing, healthcare leaders must navigate expanding roles, scopes and an increasingly varied array of tasks to ensure the provision of high-quality patient care and organizational health. Despite a range of leadership and management theories, the roles and competencies required of healthcare leaders in the context of emerging healthcare challenges have not been sufficiently conceptualized[i]

About

Robert Casanova is a healthcare management consultant and adjunct professor.

Robert earned his Master’s in Health Systems from the University of Denver in 1992 and returned as an Adjunct Professor in 1994.

He understands foundational management theories and methodologies and is an expert in applying this material in today’s healthcare environment.

As a healthcare manager and management consultant, he has found that these principles are no less critical to the organization’s reliability and ability to deliver on its promises to its customers, patients, and staff.

His work in complex, dynamic, hazardous, and unpredictable environments is as a paramedic, Wildland Fire Fighter, and fire/rescue team leader; these management principles are a way of life.

Robert’s lifelong passion for teaching started during undergraduate college. It continued into his professional life in pre-hospital medicine, with a stint in primary and secondary education and a long history as an adjunct college professor.

Robert is a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt and a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ).

Avocations include outdoor activities in the Colorado Mountains and playing classical music on the guitar and cello.

Obsessions include “doing more with less effort.”
